They support the proclamation of the Gospel, the building of the Church, the work of mission priests, and collecting funds for missions around the world.
The local diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies Office (PMSO) plays a crucial role in supporting the worldwide mission of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The PMO at the Diocese of Bridgeport serves as a direct link between the global Church’s mission efforts, represented by TPMS, and the Diocese of Bridgeport. Here’s how they support the worldwide mission.
The Diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies Office facilitates mission appeals, during Mission Sunday and other special occasions. These appeals encourage parishioners to donate to the missions and participate actively in the global mission of the Church. It coordinates assigning the missionaries that volunteer to present during Mission Sunday with the local pastors. It ensures that the volunteers meet all Safe Environment requirements in order for them to be onsite at a parish.
One of the primary roles of the diocesan PMSO is fundraising for the missions. It organizes and oversees local fundraising campaigns and events to collect financial resources that support TPMS projects worldwide. There are three fundraising events a year:
It provides support and guidance to local missionaries and mission projects. This can include financial assistance, logistical support, and ensuring that the work of local missionaries aligns with the goals of TPMS.
The Diocesan PMSO communicates regularly with TPMS at the national and international levels. It shares updates on fundraising efforts, mission activities, and the needs of the diocese, contributing to a global network of support.
The Diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies Office coordinates and promotes the mission activities and initiatives of TPMS within the Diocese of Bridgeport. It serves as the local voice and face of TPMS, encouraging awareness and participation in the TPMS mission.
The PMSO can play a role in the formation and training of missionaries who will be sent abroad. It may assist in selecting, preparing, and supporting individuals or groups going on mission trips.
It maintains accurate records of fundraising and mission-related activities, ensuring transparency and accountability. These records are shared with the national TPMS leadership and other relevant entities. Financial reports are due in February of each year.
While supporting the global mission, the diocesan office adapts its efforts to the specific needs and challenges of their local communities. This ensures that the resources collected are used effectively and efficiently.
The Diocesan PMSO engages in educational efforts to inform the local community about the work of TPMS and the global missions of the Church. It may conduct seminars, workshops, and awareness programs.
